Immunotherapy has brought promising breakthroughs to several types of cancer. Cervical cancer has a relatively large number of mutations β gene changes β which may make it more sensitive to immunotherapy drugs and a suitable candidate for this treatment approach.
A number of clinical trials are in full swing. Researchers recently summarized a phase II trial of single-drug nivolumab (Opdivo) for recurrent cervical cancer. Among the 24 patients enrolled, 19 had cervical cancer and 5 had vaginal cancer. Of the cervical cancer patients, 26% responded to the drug β an encouraging result that has prompted researchers to continue refining the single-drug approach through further trials.
Studies using single-agent immunotherapy with drugs such as pembrolizumab (Keytruda) or nivolumab show that 15β25% of patients respond, but the remaining patients do not benefit, leaving considerable room for improvement. For this reason, researchers are increasingly focused on combination trials for cervical cancer.
One experiment currently underway pairs the immunotherapy drug atezolizumab (Tecentriq) with the anti-angiogenic agent bevacizumab, which prevents cancer cells from forming the new blood vessels they need to grow. Bevacizumab is already an active drug against cervical cancer, and preclinical data suggest that it can also improve the efficacy of immunotherapy. This makes it an exciting combination for cervical cancer, and researchers are eagerly awaiting the results of this study.
In another clinical trial, researchers are studying how two immunotherapy drugs β durvalumab (Imfinzi) and tremelimumab β can be combined with radiation therapy to determine whether radiation can enhance the immune response against cervical cancer. The growing volume of cervical cancer immunotherapy research has added great hope for patients, and with multiple combination approaches now being explored simultaneously, the field is moving meaningfully toward better treatment outcomes.
