MENTAL HEALTH SUPPORT FOR
STAGE 4 CANCER
Mental health conditions in stage 4 cancer patients are clinical problems with clinical solutions. The fact that distress is expected does not make it acceptable to leave untreated -- any more than expected physical pain is acceptable to leave untreated.
Mental Health Support Options
Psycho-Oncology Specialists
Psychologists, psychiatrists, and social workers with cancer-specific training. The most effective resource for significant depression, anxiety, or adjustment disorders. Concentrated at comprehensive cancer centres; access elsewhere varies.
Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
Evidence-based therapy adapted for cancer-specific concerns. Effective for depression, anxiety, insomnia, and fear of disease progression. Available in-person and through teletherapy platforms.
Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR)
An 8-week structured programme with documented evidence for reducing anxiety, depression, and fatigue in cancer patients. Multiple systematic reviews support its effectiveness.
Antidepressant Medication
SSRIs and SNRIs are effective for depression and anxiety in cancer patients with minimal significant interactions for most treatments. Important exception: certain SSRIs inhibit CYP2D6 and interact with tamoxifen -- discuss specifically with your team.
Peer Support
Disease-specific support groups provide experiential knowledge and normalised shared experience that clinical care does not offer. Evidence shows benefit for mood, coping, and sense of isolation.
Caregiver Support
Caregiver depression rates are comparable to patient rates. Treating the caregiver as part of the patient care, not as a bystander to it, matters for the patient wellbeing and for the caregiver.

How CancerFax Helps
CancerFax is a specialist cancer access and patient-navigation platform. We help patients and families understand their options, organise medical records, coordinate hospital communication, and support cross-border treatment planning where appropriate.
We help collect and organise reports, scans, pathology, biomarker results, and treatment history for structured case review.
We communicate with hospitals or trial teams to assess whether a case may be suitable for further screening.
We support appointment coordination, document submission, translation, and direct communication with international departments.
For international patients, we help with practical coordination — travel planning, hospital admission guidance, and local support.
If this option is not suitable, we help explore other relevant treatments, clinical trials, or advanced care pathways.
From inquiry through to follow-up, our coordinators provide a single point of contact for the family.
CancerFax does not guarantee treatment access, eligibility, or clinical outcome. Our role is to help patients access accurate information, structured review, and appropriate specialist pathways.
