CHINA'S HYBRID IMMUNOTHERAPY:
CAR-T, TIL & CHECKPOINT INHIBITORS
Cancer centres in China are studying rational combinations of CAR-T, TIL therapy and checkpoint inhibitors for hard-to-treat solid tumours. Understand what these models involve and whether your case may qualify before any travel decision.

What Hybrid Immunotherapy Means
Hybrid immunotherapy is a treatment approach that combines two or more immune-based strategies based on cancer type, mutation profile, antigen expression, immune environment and prior treatment. The aim is a rational, biology-guided plan.
CAR-T Cell Therapy
T cells engineered to recognise a specific cancer target such as Claudin18.2, mesothelin, HER2 or GPC3.
TIL Therapy
Immune cells collected from the patient's own tumour, expanded in the laboratory, then reinfused in large numbers.
Checkpoint Inhibitors
Drugs targeting PD-1, PD-L1 or CTLA-4 that release the immune system's brakes and may support CAR-T or TIL activity.
Precision Diagnostics
NGS, IHC, PD-L1 testing, HLA typing and antigen profiling that guide which combination is most appropriate.
Cancers Where This Research Is Most Relevant
Hybrid models are most studied in solid tumours where single-agent treatment often fails and clear biomarkers exist.
Gastric and Gastroesophageal Junction Cancer
China is a major centre for Claudin18.2-targeted CAR-T research. Claudin18.2-positive patients may be considered for advanced CAR-T programmes combined with checkpoint inhibitors and chemotherapy.
Liver Cancer
Combinations may include immunotherapy, targeted therapy, locoregional therapy and experimental GPC3-directed cell therapy for hepatocellular carcinoma.
Lung Cancer
Selected advanced cases are explored for immunotherapy combinations, TIL approaches or trial-based cell therapy after molecular testing of EGFR, ALK, KRAS, HER2 and PD-L1.
Cervical and Pancreatic Cancer
TIL plus checkpoint inhibitors are studied in recurrent or metastatic cervical cancer. Claudin18.2 and mesothelin research may be relevant in pancreatic cancer with appropriate biomarker testing.
How CancerFax Helps
A structured, honest pathway from report review to coordinated follow-up.
- 1
Report Collection and Case Understanding
Diagnosis, treatment history, current disease status and goals are reviewed to see whether this category of therapy is realistic at all.
- 2
Pathology and Biomarker Assessment
Reports are checked for the biomarker information combination decisions depend on; gaps such as missing NGS or antigen testing are flagged.
- 3
Trial and Pathway Mapping
Relevant trials or hospital programmes in China are identified by cancer type, biomarkers and eligibility, with city-level orientation.
- 4
Second Opinion and Pre-Screening
Reports are shared with appropriate oncology or trial teams for structured feedback and pathway assessment.
- 5
Cost, Timeline and Coordination
Guidance on likely pathway, expected stay, tissue requirements, cost factors, travel considerations and post-treatment follow-up.
Frequently Asked Questions
Hybrid Immunotherapy in China
Is hybrid immunotherapy available for all cancers?
No. It depends on cancer type, biomarkers, previous treatment, patient fitness and trial availability. Many combination approaches are available only within clinical trials, and eligibility is decided case by case after specialist review.
Can CAR-T therapy treat solid tumours?
CAR-T is well established in some blood cancers but still largely investigational in solid tumours. China is one of the most active countries studying CAR-T for gastric, pancreatic, liver and lung cancers, often using targets such as Claudin18.2 or mesothelin.
Is TIL therapy the same as CAR-T therapy?
No. CAR-T uses genetically engineered T cells from the blood, while TIL therapy uses immune cells collected from inside the tumour. Both are personalised cell therapies but work in different ways and suit different situations.
Do I need biomarker testing before considering treatment in China?
In most cases yes. Tests such as NGS, PD-L1, MSI/MMR, HER2, Claudin18.2, GPC3 and mesothelin help determine suitability for a specific therapy or trial. CancerFax can review existing reports and identify which tests may still be needed.
Can CancerFax confirm I will be accepted into a programme?
No. CancerFax helps prepare and submit the strongest possible case for review, but admission and trial selection are decided by the treating and screening teams. Honest expectation-setting is part of how CancerFax supports families.
How CancerFax Helps
CancerFax is a specialist cancer access and patient-navigation platform. We help patients and families understand their options, organise medical records, coordinate hospital communication, and support cross-border treatment planning where appropriate.
We help collect and organise reports, scans, pathology, biomarker results, and treatment history for structured case review.
We communicate with hospitals or trial teams to assess whether a case may be suitable for further screening.
We support appointment coordination, document submission, translation, and direct communication with international departments.
For international patients, we help with practical coordination โ travel planning, hospital admission guidance, and local support.
If this option is not suitable, we help explore other relevant treatments, clinical trials, or advanced care pathways.
From inquiry through to follow-up, our coordinators provide a single point of contact for the family.
CancerFax does not guarantee treatment access, eligibility, or clinical outcome. Our role is to help patients access accurate information, structured review, and appropriate specialist pathways.
