Zhi-Ming Shao

MBBS, Master of Oncology

Prof. Zhi-Ming Shao is one of China's foremost breast cancer specialists, combining high-volume surgical practice with translational research and national oncology leadership at Fudan University Shanghai Cancer Center. With a clinical career spanning more than four decades, he is internationally recognised for his contributions to triple-negative breast cancer molecular classification, adjuvant chemotherapy optimisation, and neoadjuvant immunotherapy research.

Since 2000, Prof. Shao has served as Director of Breast Surgery at Fudan University Shanghai Cancer Center, and since 2002 as Director of the Fudan University Breast Cancer Institute. He later became Director of the Fudan University Cancer Institute and Chair of General Surgery โ€” placing him at the centre of patient care, multidisciplinary management, research strategy, and academic training in China. His team's work on the 'Fudan classification' of triple-negative breast cancer divides TNBC into molecular subtypes to guide individualised treatment planning. A phase III trial led by his team showed that adjuvant capecitabine improved five-year disease-free survival in triple-negative breast cancer, with results published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology. A subsequent phase III study on camrelizumab combined with neoadjuvant chemotherapy improved pathological complete response from 44.7% to 56.8% in early and locally advanced TNBC across 40 clinical centres in China.

Please submit your reports through CancerFax for an initial assessment.

Prof. Shao specialises in breast cancer, with a particular focus on triple-negative breast cancer, high-risk breast cancer, locally advanced breast cancer, and precision treatment planning for patients requiring individualised management. His team has contributed significantly to the molecular classification of triple-negative breast cancer and to China-specific clinical trial evidence for this subtype.

Submit your medical reports through CancerFax using the Send Your Reports button. The CancerFax team will review your documents, prepare a structured case summary, and coordinate the next steps with Fudan University Shanghai Cancer Center, subject to availability and case eligibility.

A second-opinion request can be submitted through CancerFax with the patient's pathology reports, molecular profiling results, imaging, and treatment history. Prof. Shao's team has extensive experience reviewing complex and high-risk breast cancer cases, including triple-negative presentations. The final consultation format and availability depend on the hospital's scheduling.

The Fudan classification refers to work by Prof. Shao's team at Fudan University Shanghai Cancer Center that categorised triple-negative breast cancer into molecular subtypes using multi-omics analysis. This subtype-based approach supports more personalised treatment planning for TNBC โ€” an aggressive form of breast cancer that lacks the common hormone and HER2 receptor targets, making it particularly challenging to treat.

Yes. Prof. Shao has led landmark phase III clinical trials in breast cancer, including a study on adjuvant capecitabine for triple-negative breast cancer published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology, and a neoadjuvant immunotherapy trial combining camrelizumab with chemotherapy across 40 clinical centres in China. CancerFax can provide further information about trial access where relevant.
