Prof. Rui-Hua Xu is one of China's foremost gastrointestinal medical oncologists, currently serving as Professor of Medical Oncology and President of Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center (SYSUCC) in Guangzhou. He also directs the State Key Laboratory of Oncology in South China and serves as Chairman of the Chinese Society of Clinical Oncology.

With more than three decades of academic and clinical work, Prof. Xu has built an internationally recognised programme in GI cancer treatment and translational research. His clinical focus covers colorectal cancer, gastric cancer, gastroesophageal junction cancer, and esophageal squamous cell carcinoma, with particular emphasis on advanced and metastatic disease. He has been a leading investigator in global and domestic multi-centre clinical trials evaluating immunotherapy combinations for GI cancers, including the landmark ESCORT-1st study published in JAMA. His research interests include PD-1 checkpoint inhibitor strategies, liquid biopsy using circulating tumour DNA, biomarker-guided treatment selection, cancer drug resistance, and mechanisms of metastasis. Prof. Xu has been recognised as a Clarivate Highly Cited Researcher and was elected Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering in 2025.
