Patrick Hwu
MD, Board Certified in Medical Oncology
Dr. Patrick Hwu is an American medical oncologist, tumour immunologist, and physician-scientist who serves as President and Chief Executive Officer of Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, Florida. He is internationally recognised for his work in cancer immunotherapy, with a clinical focus on melanoma and a research focus on T-cell-based therapies.
Dr. Hwu's career has been closely tied to the rise of modern cancer immunotherapy. Working at the National Cancer Institute in the early 1990s alongside Dr. Steven Rosenberg, he helped demonstrate that human T cells could be genetically engineered to recognise and attack cancer, and he published research on the first chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) directed against cancer. Before joining Moffitt in 2020, he spent 17 years at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, where he was the first chair of Melanoma Medical Oncology and later Head of the Division of Cancer Medicine. His research spans melanoma immunotherapy, adoptive T-cell and TIL therapy, cancer vaccines, cytokine biology, and mechanisms of immune resistance. He continues to treat melanoma patients and maintains his own research laboratory while leading Moffitt.
