Prof. Nan-Shan Zhong, also widely known as Prof. Zhong Nanshan, is one of China's most distinguished respiratory medicine specialists. He is internationally recognised for his work in the prevention, diagnosis and management of complex respiratory diseases, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, severe respiratory infections and lung cancer-related respiratory conditions.
Prof. Zhong graduated in medicine from Beijing Medical College, now part of the Peking University Health Science Center, and later completed advanced respiratory training at the University of Edinburgh Medical School and St Bartholomew's Hospital in London, where he earned his MD from Edinburgh in 1981. He has served as Director of the Guangzhou Institute of Respiratory Disease, now commonly referred to as the Guangzhou Institute for Respiratory Health, and has held senior academic roles at Guangzhou Medical University. He was elected an Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering in 1996 and later served as President of the Chinese Medical Association and the Chinese Thoracic Society. He founded the State Key Laboratory of Respiratory Disease and is Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Thoracic Disease. In 2020 he was awarded the Medal of the Republic, one of China's highest national honours, in recognition of his contributions to medicine and public health.
