Hyun Cheol Chung

MD, PhD

Prof. Hyun Cheol Chung is a Professor of Medical Oncology and Director of Yonsei Cancer Center at Yonsei University College of Medicine and Severance Hospital in Seoul, South Korea. He is one of the most internationally recognised medical oncologists in gastrointestinal oncology, with over 25 years of clinical and research experience focused on gastric cancer, HER2-positive tumours, and immuno-oncology.

Prof. Chung has been a principal investigator and key contributor to landmark gastric cancer trials including the ToGA study, which established trastuzumab as standard of care for HER2-positive advanced gastric cancer, and KEYNOTE-811, which evaluated pembrolizumab plus trastuzumab and chemotherapy in HER2-positive disease. He has served as corresponding author on major phase III studies including KEYNOTE-063, comparing pembrolizumab and paclitaxel in Asian patients with advanced gastric and gastroesophageal junction cancer. His research spans HER2-targeted therapy, PD-1/PD-L1 immunotherapy, biomarker-driven treatment selection, and translational oncology. Prof. Chung is also associated with the Song Dang Institute for Cancer Research and the Brain Korea 21 PLUS Project for Medical Science, reflecting his deep ties to translational gastric cancer research.
