White blood cell cancer that begins in the bone marrow is referred to as leukaemia. It is a malignant, progressive disease in which an increased number of immature or dysfunctional leukocytes is formed by the bone marrow and other blood-forming organs. These suppress normal blood cell development, leading to anaemia and other symptoms.
Leukemias
Leukemia, also spelled leukaemia, is a group of cancers that usually begin in the bone marrow and result in high numbers of abnormal white blood cells. These white blood cells are not fully developed and are called blasts or leukemia cells.
Development of leukemia
Any kind of early blood-forming cell will transform into a leukemia cell in the bone marrow. Leukemia cells may be able to replicate rapidly, and may not die when they should. They live instead and build up in the marrow of the bone. These cells leak into the bloodstream over time and spread to other organs.
Types of leukemia
There are 4 main types of leukemia:
Acute leukemia versus chronic leukemia
If most of the abnormal cells are mature (look like normal white blood cells) or immature is the first factor in classifying leukemia (look more like stem cells).
Acute leukemia : Bone marrow cells can’t develop properly in acute leukemia. It continues to replicate and build up immature leukemia cells. Many people with acute leukemia can survive for just a few months without medication. Some forms of acute leukemia respond well to care, and it is possible to cure a lot of patients. There is a less optimistic view on other forms of acute leukemia.
Chronic leukemia : The cells will mature partially but not fully in chronic leukemia. These cells may look fairly regular, but they do not usually work as white blood cells do normally. They also live longer and suppress cells that are normal. For a prolonged period of time, chronic leukemias appear to develop and most individuals will survive for several years.
Myeloid leukemia versus lymphocytic leukemia
The kind of bone marrow cells that are damaged is the second element in classifying leukemia.
Myeloid leukemia: Myeloid leukemias (also known as myelocytic, myelogenous, or non-lymphocytic leukemias) are leukemias that originate in early types of myeloid cells-cells that make white blood cells (other than lymphocytes), red blood cells, or platelet-making cells (megakaryocytes).
Lymphocytic leukemia: Lymphocytic leukemias (also known as lymphoid or lymphoblastic leukemias) are considered leukemias that occur in immature types of lymphocytes.
