What is bone marrow transplant ?

Bone marrow transplant is better called as stem cell transplant in today’s world. In bone marrow transplant ineffective stem cells are replaced with healthy stem cells.

There are two broad categories of bone marrow stem cell transplant :

  1. Allogeneic bone marrow transplant
  2. Autologous stem cell transplant

Autologous stem cell transplant means patients own stem cells are infused after giving hydrous chemotherapy. It cures many lymphoma, myeloma and other solid pediatric tumours.

Allogenic transplant is a broad category and requires a suitable identical matched from family, siblings or unrelated donor registries. Even 50% matched donor can be successfully done.

Another form of transplant is called as umbilical cord donor, in this unbilical cord acts as source of stem cells.

Bone marrow transplant is a curative treatment for majority of incurative blood disorders like both benign and non benign disorders.

Stem cell collection

Stem cells are collected from bone marrow and that is why commonly it is known as bone marrow transplant. It is usually done under general anesthesia. Another source is peripheral blood where some form of growth factor is injected under skin. These growth factor mobilizes stem cells to come into blood circulation.

Why bone marrow transplant is good treatment for blood disorders ?

When we talk of disorders like leukemia, lymphoma, myeloma our defective or malignant stem cells can be killed by chemotherapy. However chances of relapse is there as these malignant cells remains inside the body and thus chances of coming back is very high. While in bone marrow malignant cells are totally replaced by new stem cells.

How is bone marrow stem cell transplant performed ?
